ITINERARY

Day 1/October 8: TORONTO – ADDIS ABADA

Depart from Toronto on Ethiopian Airline’s non-stop flight to Addis Ababa.

Day 2/October 9: CAPE TOWN (B/D)

Arrive in Addis Ababa and connect with Ethiopian Airlines non-stop service to Cape Town. VIP Meet & Greet: Cape Town International Airport
The group will be met and greeted with a private transfer to the our hotel.

Day 3/October 10: CAPE TOWN (B/SNACK)

After breakfast, you will start in our private coach for Cape Town city tour. We begin at Table Mountain (weather permitting; cable car fee not included). Enjoy panoramic views over the Mother City and the Atlantic Seaboard with Robben Island in the distance lying sleepily in Table Bay harbour. Then at the Company Gardens we’ll enjoy a walk through the garden and a visit to the oldest museum in sub-Saharan Africa. Next is the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. As we drive through the city centre,  we’ll go past the Houses of Parliament, the Grand Parade and City Hall from where Nelson Mandela first addressed South Africans after his release in February 1990.

During the afternoon, we’ll visit the infamous Robben Island which served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment and which became world famous as the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years. Round-trip ferry transfers to and from Robben Island are included. Return transfer to the hotel after our tour. Dinner is at leisure.

Day 4/October 12: CAPE POINT & PENINSULA TOUR (B/L)

Today, we visit the Cape of Good Hope and the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Travel along the Atlantic Seaboard via Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, to Hout Bay, then continue via Chapman’s Peak, one of the world’s most breath-taking coastal drives. Arrive at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point which is perceived to be the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We’ll take the “Flying Dutchman” a funicular railway located at Cape Point that’ll take us from the station up an incline through dense fynbos to the upper lighthouse.

Our lunch is at Two Oceans Restaurant. Here, we could be lulled into thinking we are relaxing on an ocean liner with the sea spread out before us. Following lunch, we travel on towards the historic Simon’s Town, a village with charming Victorian architecture, a naval base and a large penguin colony at the beautiful Boulders Beach to view the penguins in their natural habitat. We’ll end our day’s excursion with the visit to the well-known Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. Dinner is at leisure (at our own expense).

Day 5/October 12: CAPE WINELANDS TOUR (B/L)

This delightful drive (after breakfast), winds its way through superb mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads. We’ll travel over the Helshoogte Pass to the town of Franschhoek, historically dating back to the 17th century when the French Huguenots arrived. Billed as the gourmet capital of South Africa, this charming town, in a most picturesque valley, retains a French Huguenot style. We continue onto the fabled culinary skills of the Franschhoek chefs at one of the many award-winning restaurants for lunch (included in the cost).

After lunch we travel onward to Paarl, one of the Cape’s first farming districts. The town is set at the foot of the cluster of remarkable granite domes from which it takes its name. Our last stop for the day is at a wine estate on the Paarl wine route. 2 wine-tastings are also included.
Return to our hotel in Cape Town for overnight stay. Dinner is at leisure.

Day 6/October 13: CAPE TOWN – OUDTSHOORN (B/L/D)

since 1863, Oudtshoorn has been known as the ostrich capital of the world. Our first stop this morning will be at a working ostrich farm for a guided tour. Afterwards go feed and meet the ostrich up close in one of the breeding camps. Then, we head to town where we will be welcomed at the CP Nel Museum with typical Oudtshoorn hospitality. We enjoy lunch in town before continuing to the magnificent Cango Caves – a series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of touring stalagmite formations. We proceed to our hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 7/October 14: OUDTSHOORN – KNYSNA (B/L)

After breakfast and check-out, we depart for Knysna, a two hour drive through scenic country. Upon arrival in the coastal town, we will indulge in the eco-experience.

Enjoy the stunning Featherbed Nature Reserve, as we take the ferry across the Knysna Lagoon to the Western Head. From here, we will be taken up a beautiful 4×4 trail into the reserve, stopping occasionally to take in the scenery and for our guide to give us all the information we need on the various plants and animals. Guests can also choose to take a short guided tour through the coastal forest into nearby sea caves. We will then be lead to the Reserves famous outdoor restaurant where we will enjoy an amazing buffet lunch under a canopy of Milkwood trees.
After the tour, we’ll be transferred to our hotel where we spend the next two nights.

Day 8/October 15: BIRDS OF EDEN & TSITSIKAMMA TOUR (B/D)

After breakfast, we start our day with a visit to Birds of Eden which is home to about 220 different types of birds and more than 3500 birds live in the sanctuary. The award-winning bird sanctuary provides a forever home where previously caged birds can live a life of free-flight. Later, we’ll continue to the Tsitsikamma National Park, where we enjoy a walk along the suspension bridge across the Storms River mouth gorge offering incredible views and photo opportunities.

Optional activities (additional costs will apply):
Before heading back to the hotel, there would be ample opportunity to include a thrilling activity to end our day – Treetop Canopy Tour which is a zipline activity through the canopy of the Tsitsikamma Forest; a Segway tour on one of a selection of routes among cool pine forest, indigenous forest, or even explore the historical Witteklip bridge or the local township; bungy jumping or bridge walking at Bloukrans or kayak and lilo up the Storms River Gorge in Tsitsikamma.

For the not-so-adventurous, we could explore the Tsitsikamma Forest further on the Woodcutter’s Journey, visit one of the many animal sanctuaries in the area such as the Tsitsikamma wolf sanctuary or explore the various arts & craft studios and galleries in the area. We return to the hotel in the late afternoon. The evening and dinner is at leisure.

Day 9/ October 16:KNYSNA – JOHANNESBURG (B)

Following breakfast, we’ll be transferred to George Airport for our flight to Johannesburg. VIP Meet & Greet: O.R Tambo International Airport.
We will be met at the door of our aircraft and assisted through immigration, baggage collection and customs. We leave by private coach to our hotel.

Optional activities (additional costs will apply):

Day 10/October 17: JOHANNESBURG – SOWETO TOUR (B/L/D)

Our guided tour of Johannesburg & Soweto is a full day to experience the diversity. Start off with a look around the northern suburbs, and then continue to Soweto (South Western Township), which is the largest black residential area in South Africa. The tour includes points of interest, such as the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath taxi rank, Freedom Square, Regina Mundi Catholic Church. We’ll stop at Nelson Mandela’s humble house in Orlando West, Soweto, an interesting stopover for those keen to imbibe a slice of authentic history on the world’s most famous former prisoner. We continue to The Hector Pieterson Museum which is a heritage site intrinsically linked to the origins of the Soweto Uprisings and its aftermath. 

Our lunch will be at Sakhumzi’s, located in Vilakazi Street, a popular precinct in Orlando West, Soweto. This is the only street in the world that can claim to have had two Nobel Laureates as residents – the late Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Our final stop is at the Constitution Hill. It is here that South Africa’s new constitutional court opened in March 2004. Established on the site of the Johannesburg Fort, built in 1898 and later converted to the country’s most notorious prison holding political activists including Mahatma Gandhi. We return to the hotel after the tour. Dinner tonight will be at Moyo Melrose Arch and transfers to and from the restaurant are included.

Day 11/October 18: JOHANNESBURG – HOEDSPRUIT – THORNYBUSH GAME RESERVE (B/D)

Following breakfast and check-out, we are transferred to O.R. Tambo International Airport. On arrival, we check in for our flight to Hoedspruit Airport located in Northern Kruger National Park.

Welcome to Thornybush Game Reserve, an 11,500 hectares of pristine African bushveld in the Olifants Valley near the town of Hoedspruit and a premier game viewing area, with a huge diversity of mammal and bird species. The reserve is predominantly open savannah, which is prime habitat for healthy cheetah and white rhino populations. This region offers a near perfect climate year round, chilly winter evenings and refreshing summer rainfall.

Day 12 & 13/October 19/20: THORNYBUSH SAFARIS (B/L/D)

We start the day off with an early wake-up call. After coffee, tea and a snack, we start our morning activities and enjoy some leisure time and lunch from 10am – 3pm. Thereafter, we commence our second game activity until 7pm when we’ll head back to the lodge for drinks, dinner & additional leisure time. We end of our day in the African bush.

Day 14/ October 21: THORNYBUSH GAME RESERVE – SABI RIVER SUN VIA PANORAMA ROUTE (B/L/D)

Following breakfast, we’ll transfer to Sabi River Sun in Hazyview via the “Panorama Route”. Welcome to Mpumalanga….the safari capital of South Africa! It is also here that the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest Canyon in the world can be seen, as part of the spectacular ‘Panorama Route’, which includes the Victorian gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest and views that stretch to Mozambique visible from Gods Window.

Day 15/ October 22: MPUMALANGA – VICTORIA FALLS (B)

Following breakfast, we’ll transfer to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport for our flight to Livingstone. On arrival we will be met and transferred to our hotel in Victoria Falls.

The iconic town of Victoria Falls, affectionately known as “Vic Falls”, is set on the southern bank of the Zambezi River. One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s greatest geographical features. At 1,700 metres wide and over 100 metres in height, visitors cannot fail to be inspired and amazed by the sheer size, power and beauty of the thundering curtain of water which can be gazed upon from 16 view points along a network of trails through the surrounding rainforest

Day 16/ October 23: VICTORIA FALLS TOUR & SUNSET DINNER CRUISE (B,D)

Following breakfast, we take a guided tour of the Falls. It is a truly awe-inspiring experience – the sight, the sound, the smell and the humbling feeling that here indeed, is nature’s supreme masterpiece. No photograph can begin to depict the reality and nothing prepares us for our first sight. We will be accompanied through the Rainforest by a qualified Guide, who gives a brief history of the Falls and the surrounding flora, fauna, bird and wildlife. Raincoats and camera protective bags are provided when needed. Lunch and afternoon is at leisure to explore the quaint town.

Day 17/ October 24: FALLS TOUR WITH SUNSET DINNER CRUISE (B)

After breakfast, enjoy your day at leisure. Revisit the Falls or indulge in one of several optional activities.

This evening we’ll be met by our guide and directed to our awaiting coach for our Zambezi Reflections dinner cruise. Sunset Cruise trips along the Zambezi are a magnificent and extremely popular way to experience the river. Navigate a 6km stretch of river above the Falls. Enjoy drinks and a 4 course menu. This section of the river, which starts 3kms above the Falls is placid and wide and dissected with many islands. Resident hippo and crocodile are guaranteed sightings, whilst elephant herds are often seen as they cross from one island to the other in search of food. The birdlife is phenomenal and the sunsets are truly unforgettable.

Day 18/ October 25: VICTORIA FALLS – TORONTO (B)

Today, we bid ‘a fond farewell’ from South Africa and a promise to return to these enchanted lands. We board the awaiting coach for our transfer to Victoria Falls International airport.

Fly Ethiopian Airlines to arrive in Addis Ababa. We’ll be in transit to connect with Ethiopian Airlines non-stop overnight service homeward bound to Toronto.
